If you have the 4th and the 5th generation of Apple TV we have good news for you. You can add apps to Apple TV.
In addition to default apps that are installed on your Apple TV, you can go to the app store and install new apps. The process of installing apps on Apple TV is pretty straightforward, but a bit different from installing apps on mobile phones. Depending on the app you purchased for your iPhone, you can redownload it on your Apple TV. Simply access the option Not on This Apple TV from the Apple TV Purchased menu and check the list of apps you can download.
Another way is to simply browse the app store for Apple TV and download new applications. If the app is free there will be Get button and if it is paid, you will see the option to buy. For those apps you already have on your iPhone or iPad, it will ask you install the app again.
Unfortunately, if you own older generations of Apple TV you cannot easily add apps to it. However, there are workaround ways:
- Use AirPlay to stream the apps you have on your iPhone or iPad
- Jailbreak your Apple TV (warning: jailbreaking can turn bad if you are not skilled enough to do it and your device may become unusable)
How to update apps on Apple TV
Apart from adding new applications to Apple TV, you can of course update the old ones. Usually, it is set up by default that the apps are updated automatically, but if you for some reason want to turn off that option, you can always update apps manually.
By default, apps are automatically updated when new versions are released. You can turn this feature on or off.
As usual with Apple devices, you just need to find the app you want to update in the app store and see if there’s an option to update it.
How to delete apps from Apple TV
If you for some reason want to remove an app from your Apple TV, select the app and hold until the option to Play or Pause appears.

Apple is reportedly working with Microsoft on a controller-friendly version of the Apple TV app for Xbox consoles, but a launch date isn't clear.
Microsoft offers an early preview of its Xbox system software to select users, and an Apple TV app has been discovered within the preview. The app appears to be identical in form and function to its set-top box and smart TV counterparts.
Once available, users will be able to download the app, sign-in with an Apple ID, and use their existing Apple TV+ subscription and iTunes content. Apple has debuted the app on smart TVs and Roku devices, but this would be the first appearance on a console.
There is no information about the app's launch window or availability, though Windows Centralis citing sources saying that it could launch alongside the upcoming Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on November 10. Users with access to the Apple TV app report that it appears to be a finished product, thus signaling release may be soon.
On other fronts, Apple and Xbox have been at odds over Xbox Game Pass. The game streaming service was blocked from the iOS platforms due to Apple's allowable content policies.
A recent revision to the App Store rules will allow services like the Xbox Game Pass to work on iOS, but with some restrictions. Rather than download a single app to stream all games, each game on the service needs its own shell app on the App Store, which would then launch into the streaming service to play.
Apple is set to release an updated 'Apple TV 6' sometime this fall, and some speculation says it will be more competitive with the console market. Though, the presence of an Apple TV app on game consoles will likely reduce the need for a separate Apple TV set-top box.
